I'd noticed there weren't as many ants on the hummingbird feeder, when I cleaned and re-filled it this afternoon. When I got close to the feeder, an apparent explanation appeared.
A spider has built a web on the inside curve of the hummingbird feeder's support. From the spider's point of view, I suppose it's like living next door to a grocery: the edge of its web is at most a half-inch from an ant expressway.

First Hummingbird Sited!
This evening, maybe a half hour ago, I saw a hummingbird at the feeder. It's the first time that I've seen one there: quite a treat.
The sugar-water solution has been going down, so there may have been hummers here before.
Or, the ants that were marching up and down the pole may have been very, very busy.
